NEW PRAISE MUSIC

Psalm 33:1-5
“Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him. Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre; make music for him on the ten-stringed harp. Sing a new song of praise to him; play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy. For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.”

Through our many years of attending church services, we have all experienced a lot of singing, including solos, choirs, groups, and congregational singing. Most of us have sung songs from the WAY past – such as Amazing Grace, written in 1779, How Great Thou Art (1885), and others. We have also sung songs from the 20th century, such as He Touched Me (1963) and Lord, I Lift Your Name on High (1989), and we’ve also probably sung good worship songs from this century as well. The point is… EACH generation of God’s musicians writes NEW SONGS to express their love and worship of Almighty God. A good thing, I think, and so does the LORD, as expressed in today’s verses.

In our Psalm today, which was a NEW song back when it was written, Yahweh (LORD) is being praised, and not with older songs (perhaps like those sung by Moses and God’s people back then), but with NEW songs of praise, new melodies, new music and maybe a new formation of words of praise!

The teaching I get from this Psalm is that we should never STOP praising the LORD or stop writing new music to do so. That’s not a slam on the old, familiar, and comfortable songs of the past – and we may well continue singing them – but with every generation, there should be NEW praise music to Almighty God Who deserves ALL our praise.

Prayer: LORD, you DO deserve ALL my praise. Amen.
